5 Self-Defense Tips

Be honest: Would you know what to do if someone aimed a gun at you and demanded you give them your wallet?  In a situation like this, having good self-defense skills are essential.  Below are five self-defense tips.

1. Trust Your Instincts

If you feel weird about a guy in the elevator, then don’t go.  Your body’s telling you that you’re in danger.

2. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

When you’re walking, turn off the phone and put those headphones away.  You’ll be able to spot an attacker and take action faster than if you were distracted.

3. Don’t Look Like a Victim

Attackers want someone who looks like easy prey.  Simply walking with a straight back and keeping your chin high is enough to tell him, “You don’t want to mess with me.”

4. De-Escalate When You Can

De-escalation is about respecting an aggressor to prevent a situation from turning violent.  So, if an attacker wants your wallet, give it to him.  If someone’s upset with you, apologize, even if it wasn’t your fault.

5. Run if You Can

The minute you’re in danger, make a run for it!  Run to a public setting and call for help.  However, if the attacker has you cornered, get ready to fight until you get the chance to escape.
