5 Ways to Deal with Difficult People

Learn what and what not to do when dealing with difficult people with the following five tips.

1. Stay Calm

The most important part is to stay calm. Getting angry only further escalates the situation. To remain calm, try taking deep breaths.

2. Apologize

Apologizing, even if you did nothing wrong, can de-escalate the situation.

3. Don’t Take It Personally

While it’s completely normal to feel hurt when someone insults you, try to remind yourself that the insults this person slurs at you are a reflection of them, not you.

4. Walk Away

If the situation is causing you a great deal of emotional distress, then it’s best to walk away. Stepping away gives you a chance to calm down.

5. Practice Self-Care

A healthy body handles stress better than an unhealthy body. So make sure you’re eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, are getting enough sleep, and have an exercise regimen. You might also consider seeing a therapist.
